When I decided to teach myself manual photography in 2014, I made the decision to rely solely on trial and error, practice, research and patience while I learned. I’ve always enjoyed using this approach when I have the time to commit. Photography went from being primarily a hobby to an obsession and I tried to give myself enough time with each step in the progression as I could. I documented much of this journey and I plan to use much of this blog as an extension to that. I’d like to continue to offer an insight into what goes into learning through trial and error and both the failures and successes that come with approach. I hope this blog will serve as a platform for further discussions and help any other photographers determined to learn on their own.  

Around when I switched to manual full time, I began to post my photographs publicly on Flickr and I spent a lot of time and care with each post, both visually and in my documentation of the entire process behind the shot. I generally would explain why I took the shot, how I ended up in that location, the weather conditions and any other information that seems interesting or important. I had virtually nothing to go on when I started nor did I know any photographers I could use as a reference for technical or specific questions, so I explained what I did in my posts both to gain insight from my followers and offer perspective for anyone else learning this way.
